May Awareness and Acceptance Month Acknowledgements - May is one of those months that provides a wide range of opportunities for sharing awareness and acceptance for the diverse needs of our Noecker community. For this reason, we will post weekly resources, dedicating one week to each cause. We will also celebrate a school spirit day on Friday, May 23rd in support of all of the different causes we are bringing attention to throughout. Please see the attached flier.
As we shared last week, May is National Speech-Language-Hearing Month and our Speech-Language Pathologists Ms. Zeman and Ms. Pollock wanted to share the following letter to the community.
We would also like to acknowledge Asthma and Allergy Awareness. Asthma is a chronic (long-term) disease that causes inflammation and swelling of the airways. This results in narrowing of the large and small airways that carry air from the nose and mouth to the lungs. Symptoms include trouble breathing (shortness of breath), wheezing, coughing, and tightness or pain in the chest. The following can trigger asthma; Allergens, seasonal pollen, mold spores, dust, or pet dander, are common triggers. Some people also develop asthma symptoms in response to respiratory infections, airway irritants, pollution, weather changes, certain foods or medicines, strong emotions, or with exercise. For more information, please check out the following resource: https://aafa.org/asthma/asthma-facts/
Adding to our Month long commitment to spreading awareness and acknowledgement, we are also shedding light this week on Lymes Disease. Lyme disease is a bacterial infection spread to people through the bite of blacklegged ticks. Symptoms of Lyme’s disease; fever, headache, fatigue, and a characteristic skin rash “Bulls-eye”. If left untreated, infection can spread to joints, the heart, and the nervous system. Fact: Over 89,000 cases of Lyme disease were reported to the CDC. In recent years it is estimated, approximately 476,000 people may be diagnosed and treated for Lyme disease in the US each year.
For more information, please check out the following resource: https://www.cdc.gov/lyme/index.html
Social Skills Peer Models The Department of Special Services is seeking peer models for our social skills groups. Students in grades K through 6 are invited to be signed up and participate. Depending on the number of students signed up, students will be selected to participate on a rotating basis. Thank you! Sign up here!
If you have any questions, concerns, or seek clarifications please do not hesitate to reach out to your case managers , and we will work to address them in a timely manner.
